Esteban Arrufatt

Time to Share! ¡Tiempo Para Compartir!

I have had the pleasure of experiencing Esteban Arrufatt’s Latin Jazz group live and these cats are cocinando con gas, hermano. A great live ensemble, their music also translates quite well to CD, and “Time to Share! ¡Tiempo Para Compartir!” from 2006 is a smokin’ album of mostly originals and a few standards that are fresh and beautifully played. The album is full of sizzling sax courtesy of Chris Herbert, and features three different guitar textures from rocking electric, to beautiful acoustic jazz, to folky Puerto Rican quarto jibaro, thanks to gifted string pluckers Edwin Rios and Andrés Yambó. The multitalented Esteban Arruffat handles piano, bass, and percussion with equal skill and ease on the CD, and seeing him work in concert you could tell he was in full command of all that talent. Rounding out the sextet on the album is James “Chumley” Hunt on some tasty trumpet, and the very warm and cordial Jorge Fuentes jamming on conga. I had met Jorge years before at another concert and the man still remembered me and made a point of coming over to say hello when I saw him with Arrufatt’s band this time. Standout cuts on the CD are the band leader’s own compositions “On The Road” and “Beautiful Love” – you can dance to them or listen, either way they are muy caliente and well played – people at the concert were definitely cutting the rug for most of the night. Of the ‘cover versions’ the old standby “Caballo Viejo” leaps off the CD from the first note (with some great quatro), and “La Pulguita” really swings at the conclusion of the album. There are also some fine ballads that are played with taste and sentimiento. Overall, a great Latin Jazz CD for everybody, even if jazz is not your thing. I urge you to support this kind of music. Recommended.
